SAMARITANS in Schools: Developing Emotional Awareness

Pressures on young people today can be enormous. Our Taunton & Somerset branch always welcomes the opportunity to come into schools to tell students about the emotional support offered by Samaritans.

We, the Samaritans, are able to offer:

  • An interactive workshop, lasting approximately one hour. Students are given the opportunity to explore aspects of emotional health and ways to help cope with problems.
  • An assembly talk, lasting around 10 – 15 minutes. The talk covers the nature of the work that we do, and emphasises to the students that we exist as a confidential listening organisation, available 24/7, if ever they or someone known to them, need someone with whom to share a problem. The talk is particularly relevant to Years 8 -13, but we are equally happy to speak at a whole-school assembly.
  • A session tailored to the needs of the school or particular year group

Our most recent school talk at a Bridgwater school, in July 2012, brought this response:

“The message in the assembly was extremely relevant and I know that those young people will be extremely grateful to know that there is somewhere for themselves and their families to turn when they need support.

You all had a very positive impact on the group and they have been talking about how much they appreciated your honesty.”
