School Food Standards



As part of the School Food Plan, a new set of standards for all food served in schools came into force on 1st January 2015.


The new standards are designed to make it easier for school cooks to create imaginative, flexible and nutritious menus and will ensure children can enjoy food at school which supports their health and education.


The school food standards will:

    • ensure school food is healthy and nutritious
    • give greater creative freedom to school chefs to adapt to children’s preferences,  create dishes to suit their cooking skills and encourage schools and caterers to source seasonal and local food
    • reassure parents that their child is having a nutritious lunch
