Barnardo’s Mandala Therapy Service: Consultation, Supervision and Support Services for Schools.

In addition to our therapy services Mandala also delivers tailored case consultation and clinical supervision for school staff supporting a child or children with complex emotional needs due to relational trauma and/or attachment difficulties.

Oxford Brookes University have just completed an independent evaluation of Mandala’s therapeutic work with children, families and professionals. The findings are very positive and can found on our website.

Consultation support for educational settings and schools

Barnardo's recognises that many schools may wish to make referrals for children to receive 1:1 therapy sessions and whilst this remains a key part of the Mandala offer we recognise that school budgets may not always stretch to pay for this. We have therefore developed our ‘consultation’ support to offer a tailored and affordable package of support to frontline staff, or staff groups to enable them to move forward with the most effective trauma informed action plan of support for their students.

Each consultation would be a bespoke offer tailored to the needs of the school and the child/ren but would be afforded within the Pupil Premium allowance for example. We know how hard schools are working to develop their whole school offer to support good mental health & wellbeing and we see this as one available intervention to support more specialist cases.

This intervention is delivered by a Specialist Child Therapist with training and experience of the impact on children of developmental trauma and attachment difficulties. The purpose of the intervention is to enable key school staff to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence in supporting children with complex emotional needs following attachment and trauma-informed approaches.

The intervention includes three sessions in school over a period of approximately three months (or a school term) which will include:

  • An initial case consultation with key member(s) of staff including a trauma-informed exploration of the child(ren)’s presenting behaviours in the context of past experiences of relational trauma such as disrupted attachment, loss and abuse. The consultation aims to develop a better understanding of how to support the child’s emotional and attachment needs in school.
  • Two follow-on clinical case supervision sessions for the same member of staff or small group of staff. These sessions are nurturing and supportive for staff, attending to staff well-being and promoting reflective practice, creative approaches and skill development.   Each session will be for 1.5 hours and will take place at monthly intervals at a mutually convenient time.
